Why sanitation and hygiene products?
There is a lack of good infection control and basic hygiene practices in both the rural and urban communities of Nigeria. The ADCEM/DRASA infection control and hygiene partnership will help reduce the spread of infectious diseases and build a culture of strong personal hygiene across the country, beginning with local production of a world-class sanitizer product.
Why start with sanitizer?
According to the US Centers for Disease Control (CDC), 80% of all infectious diseases are spread through touch. Good hand hygiene has been shown to reduce the risk of infectious diseases such as diarrheal disease by almost 50% and respiratory tract infections by 1/3 (The Global Public Private Partnership for Handwashing with Soap). However, it is not always possible to wash your hands. The 2013 Nigeria Demographic and Health Survey found that soap and water were only available in 26% of the households where a handwashing place was observed, and water only was available in 15% of those households. That’s where sanitizer comes in.
